SAVC registration examination information for laboratory animal technologists
The SAVC registration examination for holders of non-prescribed laboratory animal technologist qualifications, or persons having to re-register, is offered on an annual basis. It is advisable that prospective candidates give themselves eighteen (18) months to prepare for the examination.
In order to be registered with the SAVC, a candidate must pass both the Computer-Based Examination and the Practical Examination.
The SAVC provides for the following examinations:
Annual examinations
SAVC registration examination
- The SAVC offers an annual registration examination for holders of foreign and non-prescribed qualifications as well as persons who have been removed from the register for more than three years.
- The examination consists of a theory (computer-based) examination as well as a practical examination. The practical examination is made up of different panels – only persons who pass the theory examination are allowed access into the practical examination.
Jurisprudence examination
- The SAVC offers a veterinary Jurisprudence examination once a year for persons who were ordered by an Inquiry Body to sit, and pass, this examination as part of their sanction for unprofessional conduct, or for persons whose qualifications suffice for purposes of either registering with Council or being authorised by Council to perform certain functions of the profession, but they must familiarise themselves with the local Jurisprudence.

- The SAVC offers a Jurisprudence examination when bringing a new profession on board, e.g. a veterinary physiotherapy Jurisprudence examination will be offered for the new veterinary physiotherapy profession.

Special SAVC registration examination for bringing a new profession on board
- The SAVC offers a special examination when bringing a new profession on board. Applications for registration and/or authorisation are evaluated and applicants may gain access, based on their training and experience, to components of the examination or to the full examination (theory and practice), at the discretion of the sub-committee for bringing the profession on board.
